"when we get a call of a plane crash over the radio, my instinct is to think of the worst one i have

that." we have new information tonight on a plane crash today just outside of hawley, minnesota. police say the crash ended the best way it could -- no injuries and only property damage. the small plane landed
in the east bound lane of highway 10... tailing a car... and hitting it before hitting the ditch. valley news team's "ashley bishop" talks with the pilot about what he thinks caused the crash... and how he was able to stay calm.
"it sounded like a machine gun going off actually because the prop was hitting the car. " a broken window and sliced metal is evidence left on this clay county car that was hit by a small plane. the driver, pilot and passenger all
survived with no injuries. "the plane was in the middle of the highway perfect," the plane was on it's way to minot and stopped in hawley to refuel and pick up a passenger. police say the pilot david goowan lost
power just after taking off. "he was forced with a life or death emergency decision to make and he was able to turn the plane around and determined the safest place to land was highway 10." dave goowan say he only had
two options once the engine stalled to panic or land the plane. "we're trained for that and what you don't know is you have a pilot that will panic or not. the ones that panic will always die and that
ones that don't won't die." "what made you stay calm in this situation?" "i am not sure, you just do what you got to do," "it is clear that his training stuck with him because that is all he had time
to do," dave felt bad for hitting car and said the plane flew fine from and said the plane flew fine from minot earlier in the day. "i think it is probably something fuel related something might have been in the tank or
not, but when it quits what do you do." the national transportation safety board and faa are investigating the crash. a preliminary report should be out in 10 days. in hawley ashley bishop valley news live.
the f-a-a was on the scene investigating the crash this afternoon and taking samples of the plane's fuel... among other things. samples were also taken from the fuel at the hawley airport. the fuel pumps
are now locked... and no one will be able to get fuel from the airport until
the tests are back. the pilot estimates the cost of damage to the plane is about $20-thousand dollars.
