the east palo alto landlord, showing remorse before a judge today. this after he was sentenced to probation, for taking extreme
car hire richmond, measures to force out rent- controlled tenants. kpix 5's devin fehely reports, the d-a is blasting the judge
for delivering what he calls "rich man's justice." [nats of the judge] "i do think it's reasonable to reduce it to a misdemeanor. that doesn't mean that i condone the conduct." and just like that... nemat maleksalehi avoided a felony
conviction and time in jail... a decision by the judge... later blasted by the district attorney's office as "rich man's justice." "san mateo county district attorney steve wagstaffe: if it were a felony, which is where it belonged i believe, then we talk
about jail. we don't just talk about here's a fine where a man of wealth can just write a check and not have to do jail like other people would." [nats of the defendant] "my feeling is beyond words -- as far as being regretful." maleksalehi expressed
remorse for his actions. he pled no contest to vandalizing his own tenants' cars... shooting out their windshields with a b-b gun last october... a crime described by police and prosecutors as cold- hearted and calculated... designed to drive poorer
residents out of their homes... and one which was only solved because it was caught on the aprtment complex's own security cameras. "resident: it's extremely unfair and unjust given what he's done." this woman... who asked that we not show her face...
because she still lives in the apartment complex and fears retaliation... says she doesn't believe the punishment fit the crime. [fullscreen] the judge sentenced maleksalehi to three years probation and 40 days of
community service helping the poor in east palo alto. he also ordered him to pay his victims for the damage as well as more 84- hundred dollars in court fines. [nats] outside court... maleksalehi dodged the cameras... in much the same way
the d-a feels he avoided justice. "san mateo county district attorney steve wagstaffe: this was an attempt to drive low-income people out of affordable housing. that's really taking advantage of people."
